Courts in Maldives deliver over 20,000 rulings in 2025

The Chief Justice of the Maldives, Abdul Ghanee Mohamed, announced that the nation’s courts adjudicated more than 20,000 cases last year, a record that underscores notable gains in judicial efficiency despite persistent operational challenges.
Opening the 2026 judicial year, Chief Justice Abdul Ghanee reported that the judiciary processed procedural requirements for 34,242 files in 2025, a workload managed through the sustained commitment of judges and administrative staff.
The courts registered 20,898 new filings during the year, which were addressed alongside a backlog of 13,351 matters carried over from previous terms. By year’s end, the judiciary had delivered 20,442 judgments, producing a case clearance rate of 107 percent. That outcome, Chief Justice Abdul Ghanee noted, represents an 11 percent increase over the 96 percent clearance rate recorded in 2024.
Attention now turns to the resolution of 1,332 outstanding cases that have been pending for more than a year. With projections indicating an influx of 21,000 new submissions in 2026, Chief Justice Abdul Ghanee affirmed the judiciary’s commitment to eliminating these long-standing backlog cases entirely within the calendar year.
