Former President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has stated that it is unacceptable to involve children in political conflict. He made the statement in a social media post condemning unfounded allegations made against President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s son at a recent demonstration held by the main opposition, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
The incident in question transpired on 12 March when a member of the MDP employed harmful and abusive language towards the First Son while speaking during the demonstration. During the rally, Mariyam Zubair accused the President of banning vape products in the Maldives because his son was caught vaping. The First Son has since faced a barrage of abuse and threats on social media. In response, the First Family has announced plans to pursue civil charges against three involved in the incident.
In his post, Dr Waheed expressed deep concern over targeting politicians’ families, stating that such attacks have become part of the political culture for sometime. He called for an end to the practice, and condemned the attack on the children of President Muizzu.
His remarks have been echoed by cabinet ministers, heads of state institutions, and members of the public on various social media platforms.
