President Dr Mohamed Muizzu stated today that he is committed towards not allowing any action that may in any way affect the independence of Maldives. He declared that he would never be careless towards this.
The President made these comments while delivering the Presidential Address at the first sitting of the parliament this year.
The President asserted that this government would work to build the capacity to protect Maldives via sea, air and land.
He announced that work has commenced to double the capacity of MNDF Coast Guard. He said that efforts are underway to acquire the necessary vessels as well.
"The Special Boat Squadron for Coast Guard special operations were established on November 3, 2024."
The President emphasized that it is important to defend the airspace as well. He said that this was the reason why MNDF Air Corps were established on March 15 last year, to enhance military powers. With the commencement of the use of unmanned aerial vehicles, foreign vessels illegally in the Maldives waters were also intercepted, he said.
He announced that physical work has commenced to establish air bases in the north and south of Maldives.
Additional work planned ahead for 2025:
- Efforts to expand MNDF Marine Corps capacity
- Expansion of space and resources at Girifushi Training Centre
- Human resources will be enhanced, and systemic functions will be modernized
- Acquiring additional resources needed for MNDF Fire and Rescue department
In regards to Police services, the President said that work is being done to further strengthen Police services towards implementing the law and maintaining law and order in the country.
He stated that since he assumed office, Police Stations have been established in 27 islands. Efforts are also ongoing to newly establish police services in 39 islands. In addition to this, provision of permanent police stations in 20 islands which currently have temporary police stations will also be worked on this year. This will lead to Police Services being available across the country, he highlighted.
The President also said that Police capacity will be built up to carry out the large scale operations that have been commenced to combat drug and gang related crimes.
