President Dr. Mohammed Muizzu underscored the vital role of press freedom in upholding human dignity and advancing justice, in a statement shared on social media to mark International Press Freedom Day.
In his message, President Muizzu reflected on this year’s theme, “Reporting in the Brave New World: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media.”
He acknowledged that while artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to support the dissemination of accurate information, irresponsible use can lead to the spread of misinformation and manipulation. He emphasized the need to harness AI positively and responsibly in support of credible journalism.
President Muizzu reaffirmed his government's commitment to fostering an environment that supports independent and accountable journalism in Sri Lanka. He praised journalists around the world for their courage in delivering truthful and reliable information, noting their critical role in protecting democratic values, ensuring societal development, and promoting justice.
World Press Freedom Day is commemorated annually on May 3rd. This year, Sri Lanka improved its position on the Press Freedom Index published by Reporters Without Borders, moving up two places to rank 104th globally.
