President Abdulla Yameen
President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom declared that he was arrested and kept in a bungalow in Kaafu atoll Aarah island for eight days during Former President Mohamed Nasheed’s administration and, therefore, would like to file a lawsuit against Nasheed for compensation.
In a statement issued by President Yameen last September, he stated that he was detailed in July 2010 and kept in a bungalow, from where he was not permitted to go farther then 100 foot. However, he had been allowed to use his mobile phone.
President Yameen elaborated that he had contacted some foreign diplomats himself and was allowed to meet his family for two hours per day and 45 minutes with his lawyers. His family was later allowed to stay with him in Aarah with the help of an American diplomat.
President Yameen further said that he was fully released after discussions with the diplomat and the government.
Noting that keeping him isolated in Aarah under military security and being deprived of the freedom to do anything without permission constituted as an “arrest”, he declared that he wants to file a lawsuit against Nasheed for the wrongdoing.
By revealing the details of his arrest, President Yameen added that he had been forcefully summoned to Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) headquarters by the order of Chief of Defence Force Moosa Ali Jaleel.
Currently, the former Minister of Defence Ameen Faisal is undergoing trials regarding the president’s detention.
