Fisheries and agriculture Minister Dr.Muhammad Shainee has officially started a sea cucumber harvest program in Laamu Danbidhoo and Isdhoo Kalaidhoo.
To start the program, the minister released some sea cucumbers into a cage, to be used for harvest.
The government is providing all the necessary equipment to harvest. Fisheries Ministry gave loans to those who expressed interest to participate in the program. Fisheries Ministry said that they plan to give loans to 100 individuals from two islands and now they have finalized 30 people who will receive loans.
It is expected that through this program, sea cucumber can be harvested in export quantities. This is the first time; such a program is being conducted in Maldives. The ministry will also be providing technical assistance throughout the program.
