Home Minister calls for peaceful protests

In an interview with Haveeru, Home Minister noted that as in accordance with the laws associated with the freedom of assembly, actions must not be carried out in a way that impede the duty of the security forces and cause difficulties to the public. “Also the protests are being held in a commercial area. Hence many people have faced various losses and difficulties due to the continued protests every single night. The stability and peace in the capital have been undermined by acts such as verbal abuse and shouting obscenities,” Jameel detailed. Home Minister further stressed that the injuries caused to security forces must be mitigated. While adding that Police officers had been subject to various attacks, Jameel condemned such actions of some of the protesters. “Hence I’ve asked the Police Commissioner to expedite the investigation into the perpetrators of violence against the security forces and prosecute them accordingly. That is because the lives of Police officers are constantly at risk. It is not democracy to carry out targeted attacks on the security forces,” Home Minister said. Contrary to Home Minister’s claims, MDP has repeatedly stressed that the Police intentionally engage in actions to infuriate and windup the peaceful protesters. In addition, MDP has also alleged that Police were carrying out targeted attacks on specific protesters.
