The appointment was made following the resignation of Minister of Finance and Treasury Ahmed Inaz on December 29. Inaz resigned from his post a day after ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) activists confronted him claiming that he held a "secret" meeting with Mulaku MP Abdulla Yamin.
