Ruling party city councilor charged

Prosecutors on Monday formally charged ruling party city council member Zaidul Ameen, with the trial scheduled for 11:00 am Tuesday.
Ameen who represents ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) in the Male City Council has been accused of blackmailing top government officials and was taken into custody on January 13.
He had been held in remand in the police detention facility in Dhoonidhoo island for 15 days before the court transferred him under house arrest for another 15.
Ameen faces three separate charges including illegally obtaining and disclosure of confidential information and obstruction of rule of law.
The penalty for all three charges under the constitution is jail time of four months and 24 days.
He has also been slapped with a travel ban which prevents him from travelling anywhere outside the capital Male.
Ameen is an ousted PPM leader Maumoon Abdul Gayoom loyalist and had backed the elder Gayoom after the split in the party.
