President Nasheed

Prosecutor General has decided to appeal the case of the former president Mohamed Nasheed, who is currently serving a 13-year prison sentence by the state. Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office issued a statement this evening saying that the PG decided to do so because President Mohamed Nasheed has made a request to appeal the case by the state under the authority granted to the Prosecutor General from Article 223-I of the Constitution. The statement says that many people are questioning about the proceedings of that trial. And that President Nasheed’s attorneys have said that sufficient time was not given to prepare and some rights of the former president were lost. Statement from the PG Office also said that the trial’s paperwork was not received to make an appeal. Former President Mohamed Nasheed was sentenced to 13 years in prison for the unlawful arrest of the Chief Judge of the Criminal Court, Abdulla Mohamed as the Commander in Chief of the armed forces.
