Fourteen staff members from island councils have departed for India to participate in a technical training programme on waste and resource management, the Ministry of Tourism and Environment has said. The participants represent 13 islands from Zones 2, 4, and 5.
The four day programme at ICWMR, TERI School of Advanced Studies in New Delhi will enhance the participants' waste management expertise, contributing to more sustainable environmental practices across their respective islands, it said.
Prior to departure, Deputy Minister of Tourism and Environment Ahmed Nizam met with the participants to extend his best wishes and encouraged them to maximise this valuable learning opportunity.
The Ministry said the training programme is an important step to strengthen the waste management system in islands and ensure sustainable environmental protection practices.
The Ministry also noted that the knowledge and experience gained from the training will be used to further strengthen the waste management system in the participating islands.
The Administration has stepped up efforts to strengthen the waste management sector in Maldives through the provision of equipment and technical assistance to islands.
The Ministry is also working on setting up mechanical composters and waste-to-energy systems in islands.
