Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) has signed an agreement with the Ministry of Social Development to offer employment opportunities to people with disabilities and facing poverty.
The agreement is set to offer employment opportunities to people with disabilities and the impoverished identified by the government’s 'Haalu Kihineh?' programme.
The initiative launched in May last year involves visiting residents across all islands in the Maldives to assess their well-being, identify individuals in need, and provide necessary services.
Under the agreement, the Ministry will ensure that people with disabilities are employed and assigned duties according to their physical capabilities.
The Ministry will also ensure that applicants facing poverty, identified through the ‘Haalu Kihineh?’ programme are offered jobs based on their qualifications and capabilities.
Through this collaborative effort, the Ministry aims to alleviate impoverished families and people with disabilities to reduce dependency and offer them the opportunity to live with dignity. The Ministry has said that this will also enhance efforts to build a resilient society.
The 'Haalu Kihineh?' programme initially began in Hulhumale'. In alignment with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's vision of fostering a compassionate society, the programme aims to strengthen relationships and build trust between the government and the citizens.
Ministry officials have visited over 10,000 households in Hulhumale’ and 14 different Atolls and inquired about the well-being of its residents thus far.
The Ministry is working closely with public service institutions, relevant agencies, atoll councils, local island councils, and WDCs, to conduct the programme. The goal is to visit every household in the Maldives within a year to identify individuals requiring special assistance from the state.
