Cat shelter costs MVR 1.2 billion in non-recurrent expenditure, says Minister

The non-recurrent expenditure of the cat shelter established in Hulhumale’ is expected to reach MVR 1.2 billion, Animal Welfare Minister Dr Maryam Maria has said.
Replying to a question by Galolhu North MP Mohamed Ibrahim at the Parliament on Wednesday, Minister Maria said excluding operating expenses, the cat facility would cost MVR 1.2 billion. In addition, the Ministry noted that there will be monthly expenses for the maintenance of the cats.
“The non-recurrent expenditure will be around MVR 1.2 billion and the maintenance and care of 2,000 cats at the facility will amount to MVR 700,000 per month. Every three months, the expenses will cost MVR 3.4 million, with an annual estimate of MVR 10.8 billion," she said.
The total budget of the facility will be MVR 368 million per month and MVR 5,416 per cat per year, she said.
Minister Maria said the Ministry took over the operation of the cat facility in February this year. At the time of handover, the facility was not adequate.y equipped to care for animals, she added.
