At least 25 food outlets in the Maldivian capital have been shut down for failure to meet standards as part of an ongoing week-long compliance check by the Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA).
The mass inspection, targeting tea shops, restaurants, cafes, takeaway outlets and other such establishments, as well as unregistered food outlets in Male’ City, Vilimale’ and Hulhumale’, launched on Sunday and will continue until Thursday.
The MFDA is carrying out the inspection in collaboration with the Male’ City Council and the Housing Development Corporation (HDC).
The Male’ City Council, which is joining the MFDA in its inspection in Male’ City and Vilimale’ said that at least 25 outlets served with notice of closure during the first two days of inspections, for failing to register, failure to take necessary permits, and failure to meet hygiene standards.
The City Council said that while the inspection was scheduled to wrap up on Thursday, the authorities have decided to extend the duration due to the sheer number of food outlets in the capital.
