Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim has issued a stark warning over the Maldives’ escalating diabetes epidemic, urging citizens to embrace early detection and sweeping lifestyle reforms to mitigate the disease’s profound health risks.
In an interview with PSM News, conducted as part of an awareness campaign marking World Diabetes Day, observed globally on 14 November, Minister Nazim described diabetes as one of the most pressing health challenges confronting the nation. He noted that diabetes, among other non-communicable diseases (NCDs), is a source of mounting concern across the country.
The minister underscored that many aspects of diabetes are directly linked to lifestyle patterns. He argued that structuring daily routines in a disciplined manner can significantly reduce the complications associated with the condition.
He implored the public to focus on prevention by cultivating sound health habits, including regular exercise and adopting balanced eating and drinking practices. Such measures, he underscored, are essential to protecting against conditions like diabetes.
A central pillar of his strategy is proactive screening. He stressed the importance of early testing and timely medical consultation to minimise risks. “We know today that if individuals undergo early testing, seek advice and treatment from a physician, and maintain regular medical consultations and prescribed medication, a diabetes patient can indeed live a normal life,” Minister Nazim said.
He continued, “Therefore, my appeal today is that all citizens prioritise regular testing, consult their doctor, adhere to their medication regimen, and diligently ensure their daily lifestyle habits remain within sound health standards.”
To mark World Diabetes Day, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) and Hulhumalé Hospital collaborated on an outreach initiative aimed at raising public awareness. As part of the programme, staff visited households in Hulhumalé, disseminating vital information on identifying diabetes and precautions for those already living with the condition.
Health experts highlight that individuals suffering from diabetes must deliberately structure their lives to ensure sugar levels remain controlled. Patients are required to undergo specific tests to assess their current health status, confirm that sugar levels are managed, and determine whether any organs have been damaged by the disease. Expert further stressed that maintaining disciplined eating and drinking habits, alongside regular physical activity, is indispensable for living safely with diabetes.
