Mohamed Hussain Shareef, the minister at the President's Office has stated that it was "extremely unusual" for a mechanical fault to set off the explosion on board the Presidential yatch.
He stated this in a statement given to CNN on Monday following the explosion, which had injured First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim and two others.
Minister Shareef said that they have not yet been able to determine the exact cause of the incident but had not ruled out any theories in connection to the incident.
The accident had attracted the attention of many media and world leaders.
