The Maldives Police Service has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United States Department of Homeland Security to strengthen cooperation in combating transnational crime and enhancing law enforcement capabilities.
According to the Maldives Police Service, the agreement is aimed at improving operational collaboration between the two agencies and addressing emerging security challenges.
The MoU was signed during a special ceremony held at Iskandhar Building in Malé between the Maldives Police Service and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), a directorate of the US Department of Homeland Security's Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.
The agreement was signed by Regional Attaché Earl Mattear on behalf of Homeland Security Investigations and Commissioner of Police Ahmed Mohamed on behalf of the Maldives Police Service.
Under the agreement, both agencies will cooperate in several key areas, including information sharing, investigations and capacity building.
The MoU establishes a framework for regular consultations and the exchange of information between the two agencies to support law enforcement operations.
It also seeks to strengthen efforts to prevent, disrupt and investigate transnational criminal activities affecting both countries.
In addition, the agreement includes measures to enhance investigative capabilities and provide training opportunities for law enforcement personnel.
The Maldives Police Service stated that the partnership will support ongoing efforts to strengthen public safety, improve border security and address evolving security threats through closer international cooperation.
