PNC Secures Baarashu Council Presidency Seat

Ibrahim Shujau, the Member of Parliament for the Baarashu constituency, has announced that the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) candidate has secured the seat for the President of the HA. Baarashu Council.
In a social media post featuring a snippet of a song, Shujau congratulated Ali Shameem on his victory.
“Congratulations to the President-elect of the Baarashu Council, Ali Shameem (Alibe). I have no doubt that with the help of Almighty Allah, under the leadership of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and during Alibe’s presidency, the people of Baarashu will achieve new heights of development,” Shujau stated.
It is understood that Ali Shameem, who previously served on the HA. Atoll Council, secured the seat because no other candidates contested the position.
Ali Shameem currently serves as a Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works.
The PNC has also secured the HA. Utheemu Council Presidency due to a lack of opposing candidates. The Utheemu seat was won by the incumbent president, Abdulla Rasheed, who defended the position for a fourth term.
While the Elections Commission (EC) has stated that it has accepted the candidacy of 2,888 individuals for the 2026 Local Council Elections and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections, the commission has not yet released the official list of candidates.
A total of 1,356 members are scheduled to be elected across 225 constituencies in this election. This includes 678 members for local councils and 678 members for Women’s Development Committees.
A total of 294,937 people are eligible to vote in this election. The EC has scheduled the election to take place on Saturday, April 4, 2026.
