The man arrested for stopping a WAMCO vehicle and assaulting one of its occupants has been released on conditions after the expiry of his remand.
Ahmed Shamoon, 28, from L. Gan, was arrested last week for allegedly blocking a WAMCO vehicle and attacking an employee inside. He was initially remanded for five days, and police have forwarded charges of assault.
According to authorities, Shamoon was released after his remand period ended, with the court imposing conditions and warning that he may be re‑arrested if he violates them. He was released on the grounds that the charges in the current case are minor.
Records show that Shamoon has previously faced serious charges related to drug trafficking. In an earlier case, the Drug Enforcement Department searched four houses, a motorcycle and a boat in the North Harbor area, recovering more than two kilograms of drugs.
Prosecutors charged him with drug use, possession, and concealment of property and money obtained through crime. However, the Criminal Court acquitted him, ruling that the charges were not proven. The case was presided over by Judge Hussain Faiz Rashad, who was recently dismissed over a behavioural misconduct case.
The Prosecutor General’s Office later appealed the acquittal to the High Court, where the case remains undecided. Several others were also charged alongside Shamoon in that case.
