The construction of a 14-room facility featuring private rooms and isolation capabilities at Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital (KRH) has been awarded to Altec Maldives Private Limited.
This project marks the first standalone project in the Maldives to be carried out with funding from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).
The contract was awarded to Altec Maldives for a total of MVR 53,560,648.01. According to the agreement, the project must be completed within 435 days. The Ministry of Health stated that once this facility is established, it will provide significant relief from the current space constraints and other difficulties faced by patients and their caregivers.
According to the Health Ministry, the 14 private rooms developed under this project are designed with attached bathrooms to accommodate both the patient and a caregiver. These include specialized rooms for moderate patients, critical patients, and persons with special needs. Additionally, the facility will be equipped to isolate and treat patients during outbreaks of infectious diseases, such as COVID-19.
Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital is the busiest medical center in the Maldives outside of the Greater Malé Area. In addition to residents of Haa Alif, Haa Dhaalu, and Shaviyani Atolls, many people from other atolls seek specialist and super-specialist services, as well as surgeries, from this hospital. As patients currently have to be admitted to general wards, those seeking long-term treatment face various challenges.
Furthermore, although KRH serves as a center for healthcare training and medical student modules, the lack of adequate space has necessitated renting external venues for training sessions until now. With over 700 employees working under the hospital, the new facility will establish the necessary resources for staff training and community workshops.
