President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has detailed a comprehensive suite of national sports projects designed to elevate the country’s athletic capabilities to international standards. The cornerstone of this ongoing initiative is a state-of-the-art indoor Futsal complex in Hulhumalé, aimed at addressing a long-standing shortage of dedicated sporting venues in the densely populated capital region.
During a youth event titled 'Espresso with Raees', President Muizzu shared architectural concepts for the multi-tiered facility. "The land has been secured for the futsal stadium in Hulhumalé," the president said. "The ground level will feature a stadium capable of hosting international tournaments, as depicted in the architectural drawings, while the upper two floors will house four additional training pitches." The complex is slated to include classrooms, locker rooms, a first-aid centre, and a cafeteria.
To insulate these public works from global economic volatility, the administration has utilised a "guaranteed financing system" for the Hulhumalé stadium. "The funding for all of these initiatives is secured through a guaranteed financing system," President Muizzu said. "In simple terms, this is financing that will not stall amidst our cost-cutting measures necessitated by ongoing global conflicts."
The urgency is underscored by a deficit of indoor spaces, forcing the top-ranked South Asian Futsal champions to share the congested Rehendhi Turf. Beyond the flagship stadium, the government is advancing a skate arena at Usfasgandu, a bowling arena in Malé’s Industrial Village, and an e-gaming stadium at Sultan Park. Projects are also proceeding across twenty islands with populations exceeding 3,000 residents.
"Construction will commence within a few months," President Muizzu explained. "During the second quarter of this year, work on the bowling arena, the arcade centre, the indoor futsal and netball complexes, as well as the play park, will begin promptly, as these projects are currently in their final planning stages."
