Most Fitr Zakat categories increase this Ramadan, except Thai white rice

The price of several staple items used to calculate Fitr Zakat, including the commonly consumed basmati rice, has increased for this year’s Ramadan.
According to the announcement issued by the Zakat House, the Fitr Zakat amounts for 1447 are as follows:
Ordinary rice: MVR 12
Thailand white rice: MVR 53
Red rice: MVR 96
Basmati rice (ordinary): MVR 77
Basmati rice (medium quality): MVR 109
Basmati rice (best quality): MVR 136
Ordinary flour: MVR 10
Wheat flour: MVR 75
The amount payable for ordinary rice and ordinary flour remains unchanged. Payments for Thailand white rice have decreased compared to last year, while all other categories have increased.
This Ramadan, Thailand white rice will cost MVR 9 less as Fitr Zakat compared to last year. Red rice has increased by MVR 10, ordinary basmati by MVR 3, medium‑quality basmati by MVR 9, and best‑quality basmati by MVR 3, according to the Zakat House.
Fitr Zakat will be accepted online again this year, with cash payments accepted at the Islamic Centre Hall in Malé and through island councils in the atolls.
Online payments will be accepted from the first day of Ramadan until 06:00 hrs on the 27th of Ramadan. Cash payments will be accepted every day except public holidays and weekends.
Fitr Zakat is obligatory upon every Muslim and is paid based on the staple food they consume. Its amount is equivalent to one sa’, traditionally measured as two cupped handfuls.
