President commits to restarting stalled waste management initiatives in the North

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has committed to decisive action to restart stalled waste management initiatives in 20 islands across the northern region, including Sh. Feevah. The President made the announcement while addressing residents of Feevah during his ongoing tour of the inhabited islands in North Miladhunmadulu Atoll.
Speaking on the currently suspended projects, funded externally and contracted to a private company, the President acknowledged the limited progress achieved by the relevant authorities in efforts to revive them. He noted that alternative approaches are now being pursued, with new arrangements underway to resolve the issue and resume the projects.
President Dr Muizzu also assured that the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), which is presently undertaking several projects on the island, including the construction of a new school building and beach facilities, will develop the muddy area where housing plots have been allocated.
During the visit, the President witnessed the commencement of several development projects, many of which were proposed by the Feevah Council during a previous meeting held in February 2024. These included the groundbreaking of a fitness and recreation centre – addressing a longstanding concern raised by the community – and the initiation of works on a new school building.
Additionally, construction also began on a new police station. The President further assured that funds would be earmarked in the 2026 Budget to support human resource development and to upgrade the island’s health centre into a 24-hour service facility. He added that if progress on the health centre does not advance at an acceptable pace within the next two weeks, the Administration will take all necessary steps to expedite the project, including terminating the existing contract with the current developer and assigning it to a new contractor.
