Nasheed called all the members of MDP to go out and vote in MDP internal elections to elect Hassan Latheef as MDP Chairperson, to show the strength of MDP. However, number of voters were less than 15,000. Previously, PPM stated that now MDP has around 15,000 members only.
However, Nasheed said that the number of people who voted were excellent and that the government cannot dishearten MDP members and that “peaceful political activities” cannot be stopped.
In a membership drive conducted by PPM yesterday more than 11 thousand forms were submitted within a day. Every week hundreds of members are joining PPM. Even last week more than 700 youth from Addu City joined PPM.
Speaking about the matter the council member of PPM, Siddeeq said that MDP failed to bring out 15,000 members for their internal elections and PPM managed to get 11,000 members to join PPM within a day. He said that it is clear now which party has more support.
“Anyone with a tongue can claim to have bigger support. That is why Nasheed says things like that. More than 35,000 members of MDP out of the 50,000 members who are claimed to be in MDP are saying that they no longer support Nasheed. They are saying that they support PPM now. That is very clear now” said Siddeeq
The membership drive conducted by PPM yesterday was part of the campaign program conducted by First Lady Madam Fathimath Ibrahim.
