People want to see their wages doubled: Nasheed

Speaking at Gaafu Dhaalu atoll Thinadhoo at the launch of the workers policy in the MDP mini-manifesto, Nasheed said that the MDP had always tried to ensure workers rights and that in that regard, MDP had first announced policies in 2006 which it would implement in its government. He said that in 2008, a labor tribunal and a Labor Relations Authority had been established which made significant improvements in ensuring labor rights. Nasheed said that under the policy, MDP would give precedence to apprentice programs designed for students and that the programs would be held during the school holidays. He added that the programs would offer students training in the fields of their interest and that the students would receive training and remuneration. “Insha Allah facilities would be built so that they could receive training and the parents would be made aware of the available opportunities. In that regard, the centres required to run the program would be established throughout the Maldives,” Nasheed said. According to Nasheed, MDP aims to create over 50,000 new employment opportunities in the next five years. MDP would also look to declare a minimum wage of MVR4,500 for employees working in private companies that generate a revenue of over MVR2 million, he added. He also pledged that MDP would also facilitate employees to be paid overtime and service charge.
