Police focus on peace and order as polls open in local elections

The Maldives Police Service has been maintained in a state of heightened institutional readiness since Thursday night, part of an expansive security mobilisation designed to ensure order during Saturday’s vote. Authorities initiated the specialised effort, designated ‘Operation Blue Ray’, to safeguard the Local Council and Women's Development Committee elections. In keeping with protocols for major national electoral events, the force has been operating under a Level 2 alert status to execute the comprehensive operation.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Abdulla Shareef, the operation’s commander, confirmed that the mobilisation has been active across the capital and the outlying atolls since forty-eight hours prior to the polls. The logistical task of dispatching electoral materials to remote atolls and centres within Malé was completed under stringent police protection.
"Our primary objective is to maintain absolute peace and order until the final results are thoroughly concluded," Assistant Commissioner Shareef said. "This operation will remain active until the voting concludes and all election-related materials have been safely returned to their designated secure facilities. At this very moment, our personnel are positioned in a state of high readiness near the polling centres, supported by the deployment of a substantial number of police officers."
To manage this deployment, Deputy Operation Commander and Chief Superintendent of Police Hussain Sameer explained that a robust system is being utilised to monitor operations via real-time updates and live video feeds from polling stations.
"Officers stationed on the ground will transmit continuous, real-time updates directly to our command," Chief Superintendent Sameer said. "In the event of any sudden emergency near a ballot box, the operations room will receive an immediate alert, further bolstered by live video feeds directly from the polling stations." Polling stations for the Local Council and Women's Development Committee election addition to a public referendum opened across the country at 8:00 a.m. Saturday morning.
