National Centre for Neuroscience and Stroke opens at Dharumavantha Hospital

A specialised centre for the treatment of neurological diseases and stroke has been opened at Dharumavantha Hospital, marking a major expansion of advanced healthcare services in the Maldives.
The National Centre for Neuroscience and Stroke was inaugurated at a special ceremony at Dharumavantha Hospital by Chief Executive Officer of the Malé City Group of Hospitals (MCGH), Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem.
The establishment of new and enhanced health services has been identified as a key government priority. In his Presidential Statement, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said specialised medical services would be expanded in the Greater Malé area. He said the opening of the neuroscience and stroke centre is part of that effort and will elevate the standard of neurological care in the Maldives.
“With the opening of this centre, the treatment of neurological diseases in the Maldives will be taken to a new level,” the President said in his statement.
Speaking at the ceremony held to launch the centre, CEO of MCGH Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem said the centre will utilise advanced medical technologies, including robotic systems, to ensure rapid and effective treatment for stroke patients. He said the centre will be linked with regional hospitals, enabling patients across the country to access high-quality neurological care regardless of location.
“With this centre, patients can expect integrated treatment in neuroscience and related fields,” he said, adding “all relevant departments will work together through a multidisciplinary approach to deliver comprehensive care.”
Furthermore, he said the centre brings together some of the country’s most experienced specialists, including the first local neurologist Ahmed Rashid, first neurosurgeon Ali Niyaf, and first pediatric neurologist Samahath, who will provide specialised services at the facility.
He added that further initiatives are planned this year at Dharumavantha Hospital and Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) to expand and strengthen healthcare services nationwide.
