The Maldivian government has expressed interest to further strengthen its age old ties with neighbouring Sri Lanka.
This comes following Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel's meeting with Sri Lanka's President Anura Kumara Dissanayake during the minister's visit to the island nation.
The Foreign Ministry detailed that Maldives expressed its interest in exploring new avenues to further strengthen the friendly relations between the two countries. The ministry also thanked the Sri Lankan government for its efforts and assistance in the development of Maldives.

In a post on X, President Dissanayake expressed gratitude for Minister Khaleel's kind words on his electoral victory and positive changes that took place in Sri Lanka.
"Together, we will strengthen our bilateral relations for a brighter future!" he wrote.
Maldives established political relations with Sri Lanka on July 26, 1965, about 60 years ago.
