Health Minister Abdullah Nazim Ibrahim has expressed concern over the growing prevalence of mental illness among the working age population in Maldives.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the first Universal Health Coverage (UHC) forum held in Maldives on Sunday, Nazim said UHC is not just a policy but a moral and social promise, serving as the foundation of equitable and resilient health systems.
Nazim highlighted that the biggest challenge facing Maldives is the rise in non‑communicable diseases (NCDs), which account for about 84 percent of deaths and illnesses nationwide. He warned that the demand for health services is increasing while the sustainability of financing remains uncertain.
“At the same time, the differences caused by climate change are now being seen. It also affects our food systems, income generation, mental health and health infrastructure. The need for psychological support is increasing, especially among the youth and working age population,” Nazim said.

He noted additional demographic pressures, including a declining fertility rate and a growing elderly population. Despite these challenges, the health service delivery index has reached 70 percent, supported by Aasandha and other national insurance services.
Nazim acknowledged that rural areas face significant difficulties in staffing and service delivery, with reliance on foreign health workers posing a systemic vulnerability. He announced that a roadmap for 2026–2030 will be developed, drawing on international experiences to address these challenges.
Although mental illness is on the rise, Nazim said no recent national study has been conducted, though agencies report a growing number of people seeking treatment.
The government has taken steps to expand support:
A mental health helpline (1677) was launched on February 21, 2024.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced that from January 1, 2026, all expenses related to mental illnesses will be covered under Aasandha.
