Special steps needed to ensure safety of tourists: Tourism Minister
Speaking to Haveeru in relation to the recent snorkeling incidents where one tourist is still missing while another had died, Minister expressed concern over the tragedies and revealed that efforts are underway to advise various parties of the tourism industry and strengthen existing regulations to ensure that such incidents do not repeat in future. In that regard, Minister added that preparations are underway to initiate various activities in relation to the safety of tourists next month. Adeeb said that Maldivian tourism had been based on the Europe market where tourists originating from the region are apt swimmers. However, now the market is dominated by east Asians who are not familiar with the ocean. “Europeans are generally strong swimmers. But the ocean is a whole new experience for the Chinese. The level of excitement for them is very different. We have to take that into account and be more aware of it when we make arrangements,” Adeeb said. Minister also said that tourism industry needs to evolve and adapt to the changing market, while increasing awareness on the ocean for tourists. In addition, the enforcement of existing regulations must be monitored and strengthened, while enhancing the role of life guards to ensure the safety of tourists who goes snorkeling. “If such incidents keep repeating it is a major concern. It will adversely affect our tourism. We need to change the services being provided with the market.”
