Govt wants to expedite Male housing projects, says minister
In response to a question over the rumors suggesting that India’s Tata Group commissioned to construct flats in Male had decided to sell some of the plots to another private party, Minister said the government has no plans to revise any of the projects and Tata’s business dealings is of no concern to the government. “Tata has not relayed any such information to the Housing Ministry. But we will look into such transactions within the regulations. Our goal is to expedite all the housing projects in Male and complete the same as soon as possible. And to offer the best product to the people once the projects are completed,” Muizzu explained. Rumors are rife that some land plots awarded to Tata to construct the flats have been bought by Hotel and Resorts Constructions chairman Mohamed Ali Janah. When contacted by Haveeru Janah refused to comment on the matter, but did not deny the rumours. Out of the land plots awarded to Tata, the plot where the former youth centre stood has now been given to the Supreme Court. After negotiations with Tata over awarding a plot from Hulhumale as an alternate broke down, the government has now decided to allocate a new plot from Male. According to the Minister, the government is yet to decide on which plot to give to the Indian company. However, Haveeru has learned that the government will give the plot adjacent to the State Trading Organization (STO) head office to Tata. “I don’t think we should be worried about who is carrying out the project. But it will go ahead with the no objection of the government. We have no information that the project is set to change hands,” Minister said.
