The police remain tightlipped on USD 30,000 in cash that went missing from the evidence lockup, over a week after the agency confirmed the discovery of the missing money, and the launch of a criminal investigation into the case.
According to the police, the money was part of evidence seized by police in response to a case lodged with the agency on September 15, 2019.
The discrepancy of USD 30,000 between the amount of money listed as being logged as evidence and the actual amount left in the lockup was discovered on August 13.
The police confirmed news of the disappearance of the money in a statement a day later, on August 14.
According to a police spokesperson, they also found a bag with damaged cash from where the money was kept.
The police said the disappearance of the money was being investigated by the Criminal Investigation Command.
When questioned on Tuesday regarding whether the police have taken action against any officers in connection to the case, or on how many officers are suspected of involvement in possible foul play in the case, a police spokesperson told Sun that they would be releasing updates as the investigation progresses.
But no updates have been released since then.
The police also have not specified which case the money was seized in connection to.
Allegations of disappearance of money, drugs and other expensive property seized by police is not new. However, this marks the first time for the police to confirm such a serious issue.
