Tourism Minister highlights need to extend tourist stay duration

Tourism Minister Thoriq Ibrahim has emphasised the importance of increasing the average length of stay of tourists visiting the Maldives.
According to the central bank, Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA)’s Monthly Economic Update for May, the number of tourists arrivals rose 18 percent in April this year compared to the same month last year. However, the total bednights fell by four percent.
While the government aims to host 2.3 million tourists this year, the Maldives has already welcomed over 1 million tourists thus far this year. With such an ambitious target, Minister Thoriq said it is vital to ensure that tourists spend more nights and more money in the Maldives. Renewed efforts must be made to achieve this, he said.
