EC sets April 4 for council and WDC elections

The Election Commission (EC) has announced that local council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections will take place on April 4, 2026. Members will be elected from 226 constituencies across the country.
The EC has begun large-scale recruitment for the elections, with more than 7,000 polling officials to be hired. Applications must be submitted via e-pass before 15:00 hrs on December 21.
The Commission is also hiring staff for several departments, including Human Resources, Administration, Media, Public Relations, IT, Finance, and Legal. Interested applicants are required to submit their documents to [email protected].
Political parties have already begun preparing for the polls. The ruling PNC, the country’s largest party, opened candidacy opportunities on Monday. Parliament—where the government holds a strong majority, has also amended the Constitution and related laws to abolish Atoll Councils and reduce the number of councilors in sparsely populated islands.
