Zeid Ra’ad Al-Hussain، the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights، has called for the immediate release of the former president Mohamed Nasheed، who has been sentenced to 13 years in prison on terror charges.
Speaking at the 30th Sessions of UN Human Rights Council held at Geneva today، Zeid had expressed that Maldivian government’s decision to move former President Mohamed Nasheed back to prison has been a “serious setback.”
Noting Nasheed’s trial as unfair and unacceptable، the High Commissioner had noted in his statement that in Maldives “the rule of law continues to be manipulated for political ends،”
Though Zeid had ‘expressed concerns over charges against Nasheed’s family’، the State has not pressed charges against any family member of Nasheed.
In addition، Zeid had urged the relevant authorities to seriously consider charges pressed، following the demands and the mass protests by the opposition.
