Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) cleared over 1,800 cargo containers last week, many of which contained essential food items.
According to MPL, a total of 1,804 containers were cleared from container and general cargo vessels between 12 and 19 July, including 1,453 containers and 351 general cargo consignments.
Cargo cleared during this period totalled 43,933.57 freight tonnes, with 41,753.59 tonnes from container vessels and 2,179.98 tonnes from general cargo vessels.
Six vessels arrived at the Male’ Commercial Harbour over the last week, including three container vessels and three general cargo vessels. Meanwhile, eight vessels departed from the harbour — four container ships and four general cargo ships.
Port operations totalled 3,758 container movements, including loading and unloading. While a total of 2,028 containers were unloaded, 1,730 containers were loaded to vessels.
Perishable goods cleared included:
- 15,530 cases of eggs
- 15,821 bags of onions
- 4,673 bags of garlic
- 3,614 cases of tomatoes
- 2,112 cases of bananas
MPL said it is working to speed up cargo clearance, noting that the time taken to clear goods has been significantly reduced compared with the previous year.
