Maldives explores new air routes after Middle East airspace closure

The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has announced it is actively engaged in high-level talks to attract additional airlines to the island nation, in direct response to the ongoing unrest in the Middle East and the subsequent disruptions to international airspace, which threaten its vital tourism industry.
In an official statement, the Ministry confirmed it was closely monitoring the situation in the Middle East, with particular attention to restrictions to Middle Eastern airspace due to the ongoing conflict.
Acknowledging that flights originating from or transiting through the Middle East are critically important for tourist arrivals, the statement outlined a proactive strategy, with the Ministry now collaborating with major airline partners and relevant international agencies to mitigate potential travel disruptions.
The primary objective, as stated by the Ministry, is to reduce the inconvenience faced by tourists visiting Maldives and locals traveling abroad. While it confirmed that some carriers have already adjusted their schedules, others continue to operate as normal.
To build an alternative network to mitigate disruptions, the Ministry revealed it is in advanced discussions to bring in more airlines from key alternative markets, specifically naming Southeast Asia, East Asia, and India.
Reaffirming its commitment to the tourism sector, the Ministry assured that the Maldives will continue to welcome tourists from around the world and will continue to maintain the highest standards of air travel safety and hospitality.
