BML Honoured by Mastercard for Advancing Maldives’ Digital Economy

Bank of Maldives (BML) has been recognised by Mastercard for its pivotal role and unwavering support to uplift the Maldives’ digital economy with the Digital Country Partnership.
The award was handed over to BML’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director Mohamed Shareef, by Mastercard’s Country Manager - Sri Lanka and Maldives, Sandun Hapugoda at the Digital Finance Leadership event held in Singapore.
The Digital Country Partnership, signed in August 2025 between the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology, BML and Mastercard, is a testament to BML’s commitment to driving digital transformation and fostering innovation across the Maldives. Through this partnership, BML and Mastercard will collaborate to create greater opportunities for individuals, businesses and communities to modernise the country’s digital infrastructure and expand access to secure, efficient digital services.
Since becoming a Principal Member of Mastercard in 2002, BML and Mastercard have partnered on several transformative projects that have shaped the nation’s payment and financial landscape including the enabling of payments on the Raajje Transport Link (RTL) as part of innovative smart city solutions.
According to the bank, receiving this recognition from Mastercard highlights the bank’s leadership in championing progress through technology and collaboration by leveraging innovative digital solutions and building strategic partnerships that contribute to the country’s economic and technological development.
