‘Maaran’ga Market’ launched in Maafushi to support businesses

A series of markets titled “Maaran’ga Market” has been launched in Maafushi, Kaafu Atoll, as part of efforts to promote small and medium enterprises in the Maldives.
The initiative is organised by the Business Center Corporation (BCC) in collaboration with the Maafushi Council and Maafushi Local Authority Company Limited (MLAC).
The market is held daily from 16:00 to 23:00 during the event period and is scheduled to take place once a month from April.
Maaran’ga Market is designed to provide small and medium enterprises with a platform to promote and sell their products, according to BCC. A total of 12 kiosks have been allocated, including four for businesses based in Maafushi and eight for businesses from Malé. Products on offer include food items, pastries and handicrafts.
Deputy Managing Director of BCC, Samih Adam, told PSM News that the initiative aims to create more opportunities for entrepreneurs, particularly start-ups.
“In Maafushi, we intend to hold the market once a month over a weekend. The main purpose of holding it here is its proximity to Malé, where many small businesses are based. This will help increase their exposure,” he said.
He added that the initiative is being carried out with support from the government and in collaboration with the Ministry of Economic Development, with a focus on creating a supportive environment for business growth.
Business owners who participated in the market welcomed the initiative, describing it as an opportunity to expand their reach and promote their products.
“It’s very positive to have a market like this. It gives small businesses a strong platform to showcase what they offer,” some vendors said.
BCC noted that Maafushi, as a hub for tourism and local enterprises, provides an ideal setting for such initiatives, which are expected to support business growth and increase market access.
