Defense Minister Adam Shareef Umar has said that the government has provided all those who lost their homes in the 2004 Tsunami with permanent housing.
Speaking at the function held to mark the national solidarity day of Maldives, the minister said that the disaster affected one third of the country and sixty two percent of the country’s GDP.
He said that many people who lost their homes during the tsunami were living in temporary shelters until very recently and it is the current government that provided them with permanent housing.
He said that in cases of disasters, the government tries to provide assistance to the best of the government’s ability. He further said that aftermath of the Tsunami showed how united Maldivians are. Meanwhile, yesterday a special catastrophe insurance scheme was introduced by Allied Insurance Company.
