The Parliament went into recess on Wednesday after wrapping up its final session of 2025, having completed 82 percent of its work.
Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla disclosed the statistics of the works undertaken by the Parliament during last sitting of the last session of the year held on Wednesday.
According to the statistics, the Parliament held 28 sittings during the last session of the year, and passed 18 bills.
They include amendments to the constitution to scrap office allowances for former presidents and introduce allowance to vice presidents who have completed a five-year term, amendments to the constitution and relevant laws to abolish atoll councils and amendment to relevant law to introduce death penalty as a punishment for trafficking prohibited drugs into the Maldives.

The 28 sitting spanned 64 hours.
Meanwhile, 142 committee meeting spanning 120 hours were held during the last session of the year. Lawmakers asked 29 questions to ministers. Work on 16 motions submitted by the government and nine motions put forth by the chair were completed.
Speaker Abdul Raheem said the 20th parliamentary assembly has consistently prioritized swift completion of key bills necessary for government operations and public services. Accordingly, he added that works on important bills were completed by extending the session.
“As such, I have decided to conclude the Parliament for recess starting today,” the Speaker said.
He expressed confidence that the lawmakers will utilize their holidays to the best extent. He also expressed confidence that lawmakers will return after the holidays for a new session with new ideas and produce results.
