Government to assess economic opportunities for Omadhoo Council from nearby uninhabited islands: President

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to introduce sustainable measures to generate economic benefits for the Omadhoo Island Council through the development of two uninhabited islands under its jurisdiction.
He made the remarks while addressing residents of Th. Omadhoo during his tour of the inhabited islands of Kolhumadulu Atoll.
Although the law prohibits the development of tourist resorts on islands under council jurisdiction, the President said the Government was considering ways for councils to still share in the benefits if such islands are developed. He added that no such restriction applies to guest houses or city hotels, offering further opportunities for growth.
He highlighted proposals from Island Councils to secure a share of revenue from uninhabited islands through formal agreements, adding that the Administration is reviewing the feasibility of such arrangements to ensure these benefits are directed to the Council.
Turning to local infrastructure, the President acknowledged the difficulties faced by residents due to delays in water and sewerage projects. He assured that these works would be completed, even if it required terminating existing contracts.
He also confirmed that the ongoing school development project would be completed in time for the next academic year. In addition, next year’s state budget will allocate funding for a new mosque, a volleyball court, the replacement of the turf at the island’s football grounds, and the expansion of sports facilities to enable year-round training.
As part of today’s programme, the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, together with the Road Development Corporation (RDC), signed an agreement to commence road development on the island.
