The Maldives' vital fisheries sector is grappling with significant operational and financial strain due to soaring global oil prices, prompting high-level discussions between the government and industry leaders.
The Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, met with representatives from the Maldives Seafood Processors and Exporters Association (MSPEA) to address the mounting challenges.
Central to the talks were the severe difficulties faced by fish exporting companies and fishing vessels, for whom fuel is a primary cost, as fluctuations in the international market directly threaten profitability and sustainability.
In response, the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources detailed the government's immediate priorities to mitigate the adverse impacts on the industry. Officials provided the latest updates on measures being taken to address specific concerns previously raised by the MSPEA in a meeting on 10 March.
The government has acknowledged that increased fuel prices are a major cost driver in exporting Maldivian fishery products, making them less competitive in foreign markets. Despite these international challenges, the Ministry affirmed its commitment to finding sustainable, collaborative solutions with industry partners to ensure the sector's development is not hampered.
Minister Shiyam concluded by extending his gratitude to the fishing industry for its full cooperation during this difficult period.
