The Maldives Immigration has simplified the process for extending tourist visas, with approvals now expected within 48 hours.
Under the revised procedure, tourists visiting the Maldives, who are granted a 30-day visa on arrival, can now apply for extensions more easily through the Imuga portal.
The changes come amid disruptions caused by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has led to flight cancellations and, in some cases, forced tourists to extend their stays. Authorities said tourism businesses had requested more flexible arrangements to address these challenges.
Speaking at a press conference at the President’s Office, Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology, Ali Ihusaan said the ministry, in collaboration with Maldives Immigration, has streamlined the application process.
Previously, applicants were required to submit nine documents, with approvals taking up to five days. Under the new system, only a passport-sized photograph is required, and extensions can be granted within one to two days.
“From today, applicants can submit a passport-sized photo, and the extension will be granted within about a day or two. This aligns with the President’s Maldives 2.0 vision, where government departments are improving service delivery. If a person needs to extend their stay, that opportunity must be facilitated,” Minister Ihusaan said.
Maldives Immigration said the updated process has been introduced while maintaining high security standards.
The government, along with Visit Maldives, is also working to attract tourists from new markets, as arrivals from some regions have declined due to the situation in the Middle East.
