DJA spokesperson Latheefa Gasim said that while the hearing on Nasheed’s case had been submitted to the Hulhumale magistrate court, there is a limitation of space in accommodating such a high profile case at the court. Former President Nasheed, former Defence Minister Tholhath Ibrahim Kaleyfaanu, former Chief of Defence Force Moosa Ali Jaleel, Brigadier General Ibrahim Mohamed Didi and Colonel Mohamed Ziyad are being prosecuted by the Prosecutor General (PG). The court with two magistrates has accepted the case earlier today. Latheefa said that the Hulhumale magistrate court which operates at a unit in the first floor of the HDC building cannot accommodate such a hearing, considering the amount of people who would want to attend. Hence she said that discussions are underway to accommodate the hearing in the HDC hall. HDC hall in its building opposite to Hulhumale Hospital is 1500 square feet. Haveeru has learned that the DJA had inspected the premises on Monday. Latheefa said that she believes that the hearings would commence after the first 10 days of Ramadan. While the Hulhumale Court had been established, the question of its legitimacy had been filed in court. However the Supreme Court had ordered to delay the case. It was the Supreme Court which had suggested PG to assign Nasheed’s case to Hulhumale Magistrate Court due to potential conflict of interest as the case involved the Chief Judge of the Criminal Court.
