Former Defense Minister Ameen Faisal charged with terrorism over the arbitrary arrest and subsequent detention of incumbent president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom by the military during former president Mohamed Nasheed's government has again asked the criminal court to allow him to travel abroad for medical treatment.
Faisal has repeatedly asked the court to lift the travel ban imposed against him claiming a heart condition which needs urgent medical care.
A family member told Avas that Faisal remains admitted in privately run ADK hospital and doctors have advised him to go abroad immediately to undergo tests that are not available in the Maldives.
The doctors' letters and hospital documents have been submitted but the judge is yet to make a decision, the family member added.
President Yameen, who was a parliament member at the time, was arrested on the 14th of June 2010, after allegations were made that he was bribing other lawmakers in an attempt to overthrow Nasheed's government.
The Supreme Court nullified the arrest and ordered his release, to which the police complied. However, upon his release, he was arrested again by the military.
Police had launched an investigation into the incident two months earlier, and Ameen had been summoned and questioned.
Ameen Faisal had denied the charges insisted that he had done nothing wrong during his tenure as the Defense Minister.
If the charges are proven against the former Minister, he faces between 10-15 years in prison.
Meanwhile, prosecutors have also charged former president Nasheed with the same offence.
Criminal court had scheduled the first hearing of the trial on Wednesday before cancelling after the court failed to deliver the summons to the former president.
Nasheed is already serving 13 years in prison over a judge's arrest before he was allowed to leave to Britain on medical leave in an internationally brokered deal.
It remains unclear if the court would now continue the trial in absentia.
