Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon has stated that the decision taken by the Maldives to join the United Nations (UN), at that time only two months into the nation’s independence, was the most important foreign policy decision where Maldivian people pledged to work towards making the world a better place.
She said this in a statement delivered to the UN on the fiftieth anniversary of the Maldives’ membership at the UN.
She said that in the past 50 years Maldives had fully committed to peace and security, commitment to to the values and principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, as well as 50 years of partnership for national progress.
Minister Dunya noted that over the past 50 years, the Maldives had introduced several important initiatives at the United Nations, the security of small states, human rights and environment, and climate change. Additionally, she said that Maldives had also been a leading voice on the issue of human rights, advocating rule of law and creating the values of human rights. Minister Dunya stated that these measures had been enacted without compromising the core national values, chiefly the country’s Islamic principles and cultural traditions.
