The Commission of National Inquiry (CNI) has said in its report that it scrutinised the bank accounts of five people alleged by Nasheed of having led the ‘coup’ to topple his government, but found nothing incriminating.
The report states that Nasheed provided a list of 67 names, whose bank accounts and telephone logs he requested be scrutinized. Nasheed also accused former President Gayoom of planning and financing the coup d’état. “General Shiyam, Retired Colonel Nazim, State Minister Fayaz, the then-Defence Minister Tholath Ibrahim and Commissioner Riyaz consented to the Commission’s scrutinizing their bank accounts. The Commission found nothing untoward or incriminating.”
The report further details that according to Nasheed, initially, it was Nazim who delivered the threat to kill him and his family; however he later clarified that the threat had been issued when Nazim met Tholath and the Generals, and that it was conveyed to him by Home Minister Hassan Afeef.
The report states that these claims were denied by Tholath, Nazim, and the rest of the people involved.
