Local boat captain still missing at sea, says coast guard
The boat named "Maarana' was en-route to Alif Alif Atoll Kuramathi resort when it was reported missing on Sunday. A Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) spokesperson said initially coast guard received reports that an aircraft had located the missing crew. But the coast guard had only found two crew members from that location, he said. The two Bangladeshi expatriates who had been in open waters for over 36 hours have now been picked up. "The Maldivian is still missing. We are still searching the area," the MNDF official said. The two crew members were picked up two miles north-west of Summer Island Resort, the spokesperson added. Coast Guard had found debris from the vessel on Sunday which mainly ferries cargo to resorts and other islands. It is not yet clear what caused the vessel to capsize.
