Everyone must join hands to prevent murder: Home Minister

While condemning the brutal murder of Ungoofaaru constituency MP Dr Afrasheem Ali, 46 early yesterday morning, Jameel stressed that "only a person from a particular house is not victim to a lethal attack." He insisted that everyone needs to work together to stop such tragic incidents. Referring to the murders of famed lawyer Ahmed Najeeb and Police Lance Corporal Adam Haleem earlier this year, Home Minister pointed out that the judiciary and law enforcement have been targeted for deadly attacks. He said that the attack yesterday was directed at the legislative body and hence it was difficult to predict who or which institution would be next. Minister stated that at a time when cold blooded murder was on the rise, the only way to curb such heinous crimes is to seek the reasons behind the upward trend and everyone working together towards one common goal. "We need to determine whether such incidents occur due to deteriorating social fabric, diminishing of long existing national unity or decreasing respect and regard for the rule of law," Jameel who is currently in Malaysia said. To that end, Jameel said that the delay in taking action over certain matters was an opportunity for things to go from bad to worse and hence stressed on the importance of taking swift action against even for minor offences. "I'm deeply concerned for the warnings and intimidation over social media networks. In other countries use of a certain language and issuing threats to people over twitter will result in action against the offender," he explained. Jameel further alleged that several gangs were active in the Maldives which have been utilized by political figures and said that not much work has been done so far to stopping them. "This is not something that can only be solved by the Police. We need to find out and discuss the issues that are facing prosecution and the judiciary. Despite political differences, everyone must sit-down and find a solution to these issues," Jameel urged. The Home Minister also said that corruption must be stopped in order to prevent crimes of such nature. While referring to capital punishment, Dr Jameel said "if everyone believes that a particular punishment would be the solution, that must also be done." Jameel had earlier voiced his support for enforcing the death penalty in the Maldives.
